What Not to Wear
If I’m not out on a Friday night, I usually reserve a couple hours for Stacy and Clinton on TLC’s What Not to Wear, but unfortunately last night I could have tuned in to every other channel that’s in my cable package EXCEPT TLC. At least it got me post something new, right? So I was thinking…. What if there was a local version of What Not to Wear?… What would a Trini do? I get the feeling most would be mortified and hope that the earth would magically open up and swallow them into a great abyss. A few might openly show their joy to get all the free stuff… we all love free stuff ! Of course there would be the girl who would cuss the “friend” who volunteered her for the makeover and remind her to return the shoes she borrowed the week before. Yes, yes, the Trini version would be hilarious! I was also thinking about Carmindy and remembered that a friend had told me Carmindy did her makeup once… this was before the fame of the show of course. Anyway, she said the makeup was great and she was really friendly. Carmindy has a signature look on the show. A fresh clean “5 minute face” (also the name of her book). Its perfect for work, no caked on foundation… just minimal to even out the skin tone, highlight the cheeks and eyes, line the eyes, mascara and lipgloss and you are ready for the world Meanwhile, lets hope that we don’t ever get chosen for a local What Not to Wear!
Ciao!
Makeup Shelf Life
Here are some tips on how long you should keep your makeup.
These are some basic guidelines for cosmetics that have already been opened for use. I will assume that you keep your makeup out of direct sunlight in a cool dry place. They really are only guidelines, you need to be smart and identify if there are changes in the consistency and smell and even discolouration. If you notice any changes, its time to toss.
Moisturizer: Three to twelve months. Always check the expiry date.
Foundation: Cream – 18 Months. Oil Free – 12 Months. (The Oil Free Foundations dry out a lot quicker than the other types.
Concealer: Twelve to Eighteen Months.
Powder: Two Years.
Blush: Cream – Twelve to Eighteen Months. Powder – Two Years.
Eyeshadow: Cream – Twelve to Eighteen Months. Powder – Two Years.
Eyeliner & Lipliner: Two Years. Sharpen regularly to prevent bacterial growth.
Liquid Eye Liner: Three Months.
Mascara: Three to Six Months.
Lipgloss / Lipstick: Eighteen Months.
Once there is no exposure to air, the shelf life will be prolonged.
Of course these guidelines are not set in stone, here are some ways you can keep your makeup clean and bacteria free…
Throw away your makeup once it starts to change colour, texture, smells badly or separates.
Always wash and dry sponges and applicators or use new ones. If using fingers to apply, always wash your hands.
Throw away eyeliner if you have an eye infection and do not use or share lipliner if you have a cold sore.
So fresh and so clean
Many of my friends ask me how to clean their makeup up brushes. Cleaning your personal makeup brushes is easy as 1, 2, 3.
1. Shampoo to get the gunk out, if after the first wash you think you need to lather up again, go right ahead.
2. Condition… imagine it’s your own hair, you’re putting these things on your face after all.
3. Rinse well ladies. Squeeze out the excess water then lay flat to dry.
Your brushes will be soft and smell yummo, most importantly they will be clean.
