It’s Over

Carnival is over and we have to get back to our regularly scheduled life. Until February 2010 comes around, I’m gonna play with makeup. I saw many lovely faces this carnival and I caught a glimpse of some celebs as well, both from the local and international scene, unfortunately I was too lazy to take my camera with me on the road. I want to say a special thank you to my fun loving masqueraders who came out early on Tuesday morning to have their makeup done. I made a collage of some of your pictures as a tribute to you!

On Tuesday, at 4:30am, I picked up the fabulous Kirk Thomas (nominee for the 2009 Caribbean Makeup Artist of the Year) and headed down to the Corner Bar on Ariapita Avenue to set up for our clients who started to arrive at 5am. After a few hours my peeps were hooked up with their gems and lashes and ready for the road… except me of course. While Kirk was doing his thing (cuz he was booked solid), next on my agenda was to pack my ish and head home to begin my own transformation. This was successfully accomplished and I joined Tribe at the rest / lunch stop, had a lil Arabian food, some gatorade and was ready for the road. Man, I love Carnival but unfortunately this year I didn’t have the time of my life as per usual. There seemed to be a lot more people than in previous years and at times it made it difficult for me to move around the band or chip behind a music truck. Nevertheless I saw many people having a good time, so that was great. Kudos to Tribe for providing a comfortable rest stop, extra security, a never ending supply of drinks and of course, beautiful costumes. I can’t wait to see your presentation for 2010.

Ciao Bellas!

Real Men Wear Eyeliner

“Real men wear eyeliner”… I saw this on a t-shirt while on vacation in Florida last year. This trend has been around for some time now and quite popular in the US and Europe especially amongst actors and musicians.

Personally I find guyliner sexy on movie stars… but hold it right there… I don’t expect a guy to go walking down Frederick Street with as much makeup as Captain Jack Sparrow on a random Saturday morning.

In Trinidad, is a progression is taking place? I think it’s great when a guy cares about his appearance. I’ve got metrosexual friends who get manicures and pedicures done, neaten their eyebrows, and wear lip balm. My question is… would the guyliner trend become socially acceptable in Trinidad? What are your thoughts on androgyny? With some convincing, I got a friend to be my model to show how subtle grooming can enhance a guy.

I took this plain ole fellow and dabbed on some concealer, brushed the eyebrows and slapped on some lip balm, a bit of guyliner for the heck of it and tah dah….

Interesting…

Carnival Hair Tips

Hi guys, I wanted to get some tips for carnival hair care to share with you and since I’m no aficionado on the topic I called my hair stylist for advice. He covers cleanliness, straight hair, curls and colour in this post…

Enjoy!

Carnival Hair Tips… By Ryan

Before making your way on to the road on Carnival Monday and Tuesday make sure your hair is clean…. Dirty hair is a huge turnoff, not to mention what the additional perspiration and dust will do on those days.

If you’re wearing your hair straight and plan to flat iron be sure to use a hair serum to keep your locks shiny and smooth.

For the curly hair girls and guys, keep hair frizz free by investing in a good moisturizer and curl activator to keep your spirals in place.

The morning of Carnival Monday is not the time to experiment with an over the counter box dye, make your appointment at your hair stylist to have your hair professionally beautiful.

For those of you with highlighted hair, show it off and don’t opt for braiding. Processed hair and braiding is the perfect combination for breakage. Also, you may have heard this time and time again but one more won’t hurt…. NO RUBBERBANDS ALLOWED!

For those of you with colour treated hair out of costume and seeking refuge at the beach, you can use a hair moisturizer combined with sunscreen to protect against the sun and salt.

No matter where you’ll be for Carnival, have a safe one!
