Glamour Calls
GLAMOUR CALLS
“When Glamour Calls we answer.” Every woman likes to feel beautiful and this is sole purpose of Glamour Calls. The founder is trained technical sciences, cosmetology and marketing, but specialises in Hair Extension Services and Makeup Artistry. When Lyndsay started, she found it quite difficult to acquire the necessary tools for mobility in both fields, particularly in Makeup Artistry. After some research, it was discovered that many, many young ladies aspired to become makeup artists and it was quite difficult for them to get their basic tools at an affordable price. This caused the focus of Glamour Calls to shift a little; one of the goals of the company is to supply budding makeup artists and their already established counterparts with high quality and cost effective products.
Glamour Calls currently carries the Coastal Scents brand of makeup palettes, makeup brushes, HD foundations, colour correctors and gel liners. Anything found on the Coastal Scents website is available to everyone; most items are in stock so you don’t have to wait for delivery as if you purchased it from the webstore. Also available are professional makeup cases and trains, which are quite difficult to source here in Trinidad. They come in fun patterns which can reflect the personality of the makeup artist. There may be other very specific items that the makeup artist could only source internationally, but the time and patience involved may be a bit taxing for a busy makeup artist, Glamour Calls is also available to assist in this area.
Glamour Calls is based in Arima and you can contact Lyndsay at 497-9527 or at glamourcalls@ yahoo.com. You can visit the Glamour Calls website for more details at www.glamourcalls.webs.com or a facebook search for Glamour Calls will take you to the webstore.
Toxic Beauty
Did you know that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not approve all cosmetics before they are put on the market?
According to the FDA Website “Unlike drug companies, cosmetic companies may use almost any ingredient they choose, with these exceptions:
1. There are a few substances that are not allowed to be used in cosmetics.
2. All color additives must be approved for their intended use. For example, a particular color additive may only be used in an eye shadow if it is approved for cosmetic use, including the area of the eyes. Many colors even have to be “certified” by FDA. That means that samples from each batch must pass special testing for purity in FDA’s own labs before they may be used.
If a product or its ingredients have not been shown to be safe, the product is supposed to have this warning statement on the label:
“Warning: The safety of this product has not been determined.”
Just so you know, there are ingredients that are prohibited by FDA regulation because of its animal carcinogenicity and likely hazard to human health like Chloroform (was once present in some skin lightening products), Methylene chloride (contained in some aerosol hairsprays before the 1970′s) and Vinyl chloride which is a human carcinogen (mainly used in the plastics industry to make PVC and also used to be an ingredient in some aerosol hairsprays)

I’ve seen time and time again friends and even working makeup artists grabbing a can of hairspray at the end of the makeup to “set it” and I always used to say “that can’t be good!?!” I mean, that product was made for your hair, it’s not called “Face Spray” right? I’m sure that those ingredients were not in the hairsprays at the time as they would have already been banned but I wouldn’t endorse using a product for something other than its intended use… you never know what a study can reveal 10 years later.
These are the ingredients that I know of off-hand and specifically relate to cancer but there are others that are prohibited and I am sure that much more information can be found on the FDA website, so you can do your own research.
Be informed and be beautiful.
xoxo
Spice Band Launch for 2011
I worked at the Spice Band Launch one week ago under key MUA Nina Alcantara and a fun team of Makeup Artists; Natalie, Racine, Kristoffer, Narvely and Ria. We started off pretty early and most of the models were on time for makeup which really helped with day not ending in a mad rush. We all had different roles but worked together and got the job done.
Some of the backstage highlights…
Here’s beautiful Meagan as she is prepped for the show. I didn’t have a pic of her in costume so I borrowed the final pic from Trini Jungle Juice, enjoy!
I started off with her foundation, highlight, contour, blush…

Then Narvely did her magic with the eyes, so hottt!

Tah Dah! The final look complete with a beautiful costume.

Tribe Band Launch for 2011
Hi All!
So much has been going on for the past couple of weeks, I wish there were a couple more hours in the day for my blogging duties.
Under the direction of key MUA Kirk Thomas, I worked at Tribe’s 2011 presentation “The Way of the Warrior”. L’oreal Trinidad and Tobago sponsored the makeup for the event and 4 of their makeup artists Reshma, Candice, Joanna and Bernice worked with us to achieve the final look for the stage. There was one other team member, O’ren who is just getting in to makeup and was plunged into the hectic backstage madness of such a huge production.
We started a little late and it really set us back a bit as we had over 40 models to attend to but everyone got out on stage on time with makeup and costumes donned.
LaToya Woods, our representative for the Miss Universe competition to be held on August 23rd, 2010 in Las Vegas, Nevada presented her National Costume on stage and it surely had the crowd’s approval. Designed by Tribe’s Monique Nobrega and Douglas John, the multicoloured piece looked beautiful on stage and on a body like LaToya’s, I’m sure it will be well received at the competition. I’ve got a little back stage sneak peak for you guys…

Sam Fine Event :: Review
As I entered the Ballroom of the Trinidad Hilton for the Revlon Building Your Beauty: The Corporate Edition on June 13th, 2010, I couldn’t help but notice the buzz of excitement from ladies who were either scurrying to their seats or seeking advice at the Revlon Beauty Booths. The first stop on my way in, was at the table where spa owner Anjanie Advanie was giving a free nail polish change to anyone who took the opportunity to sit in her chair. She was using all Revlon nail colours and the selection ranged from light pinks to bright oranges to deep burgundy.

I got there exactly at 1 pm; the time the show was advertised to start and although some had already found their seats, others were checking out the exhibits at the back of the room. Other than Revlon, I saw Motions Hair Products, VANC Marketing, Body Shaping Undergarments and Sidaico Image Management. The owner of Sidaico, Stacey Weeks, happens as well to be the person behind getting Sam Fine to Trinidad for the last three (3) years.

When the excited audience all settled into their seats around 1:20 pm the emcee for the proceedings, Jazz performer R’kardo St’von apologized for the late start and welcomed everyone to stand for the National Anthem. This was followed by an opening prayer and then the first speaker was our Honourable Minister of Health Mrs. Therese Baptiste Cornelis. She spoke a bit about her journey on her successful career path. As inspiring as the story could have been I was quite distracted by her leaving out the “H” in her pronunciation of words ending with “TH” and the fact that this was the Corporate Edition Workshop and the Honourable Minister showed up in what looked like leggings and a blouse. I’m sorry, I really missed what she said due to this. At about 1:45 pm VANC Marketing presented their hairpieces and wigs which ranged from about $200 – $2000. Soon after, Corine Mills, partner at Millhouse Designs approached the stage to speak about her experiences as a successful business woman. I listened as she told her story ad lib about her start in the fashion industry and how she combined her business background with her creativity to be part of a successful design team with her husband. It was very refreshing and inspiring.
At 2:04pm Stacey welcomed on stage the man everyone was waiting for… the charming and engaging Sam Fine. He started off talking about lighting as it relates to makeup and the importance of applying makeup in the correct lighting for which it will be displayed. He was very interactive with his audience, taking makeup related questions and providing solutions at the blink of an eye. The questions ranged from how to conceal acne scarring, how to achieve perfect brows, how to address under eye wrinkles and what are good lipstick choices and how to apply on full lips. Paula, the member of the audience who asked about her full lips got the surprise of the day when Sam immediately called her up on stage for an impromptu demonstration. He went through the steps to achieving a natural yet polished and balanced lip look.

At 2:40pm his model for the evening Cayenne was brought on stage and Sam proceeded to make her even more beautiful by naturally accentuating her features. There were oooh’s and ahhh’s from the audience as everyone paid attention to his technique of makeup application.
Check out the transformation…

Photos courtesy Kirk Thomas.
There was a 20 minute intermission at which we were treated to some light refreshments and what must have been the yummiest chocolate cupcake ever with the best frosting to cake ratio I’ve ever had. During the break, people took the opportunity to further check out the booths at the back of the room and enjoyed some complimentary Banrock Station Australian wine.

After the break, Stacey came back to the stage and spoke a little about image and the strength and power of a woman. Although the main attraction for the evening was over, many stayed on to see the Corporate Wear Showing by Keisha Duncan of Heidi Designs, the Motions Corporate Hair Styling Options with Hair Stylist Jasmine and the presentation of Corey Ellington for Body Shaping Undergarments.
As I headed to the area where Sam was signing his DVD there was a long line of ladies waiting to meet and chat with him. Man, I thought this line would have never ended! All the shy ladies who didn’t have questions before suddenly had so much to ask! He was a trooper though, even if he was tired, he didn’t let it show, he just kept smiling and answering, I really was impressed by this.

Kudos to all involved for a “fine” day.
Here was my grand finale… CLICK HERE

Interview with Celebrity MUA Sam Fine
Sam Fine didn’t deny anyone the opportunity to ask him a question, get his autograph or take a photo at the Revlon Building Your Beauty: The Corporate Edition Workshop. He took a few minutes to sit with me in the lobby of the Trinidad Hilton for a tête-à-tête and was very accommodating to me for this interview.
Thank you to Stacey Weeks for being the driving force behind having Sam Fine visit Trinidad for the past three years.
Once again, thank you Sam for sharing your time with me.
Friends, I need to apologize for the quality of the audio, especially at the end, my recorder battery failed (Murphey’s Law) and I had to finish the interview via my Blackberry voice notes.
Enjoy!

The New York Makeup Show 2010 – Day 2
It was still quite cold in New York although we were in May… temperatures were in the 40’s (F), I guess it’s not so bad if you like the feel of constant air condition, but not me, I’m a warm weather kinda gal. I knew I was on a mission though and had to get out early to get in as many hours of shopping as possible.
I had my hand band from the day before so there was no need to join the line to get in. When I entered the building I took a few minutes at the cafeteria area to gather my thoughts and run through my shopping list because at that point it was do or die.
As I was looking around I noticed it was less busy that the day before and I assume mainly that was because it was a Monday and people had their jobs to go to. It was great for me as I could have taken my time to shop and not feel compelled to get out of the way.
I bought a Kryolan foundation palette, concealer palette, a few OCC Lip Tars, some makeup brushes, airbrush foundation, airbrush cleaner, some empty palettes for depotting, a Yaby heated eyelash curler, a Japonesque double sided empty lip palette, Model in a Bottle setting spray, foundation wedges, disposable mascara wands, a bruise wheel for FX and a few other knick knacks that I can’t remember off the top of my head. Unfortunately some of the items that I tried to buy on Monday were already sold out, so lesson learnt, as long as I’m there next year, I’ll get all my shopping done on Sunday.
Throughout the day I made some new friends and caught up with some old ones. I tried to take a lot of pictures so here are a few.

Jordan, I think the ladies get mesmerized by your bright blue eyes… lol

I was so tired at the end of the day that I just wanted to put my feet up and relax. See ya next year Makeup Show!
Makeover :: June 12, 2010
I spent the afternoon with my cousin Alana so I decided to give her a mini makeover.
Beautiful before and after, inside and out.
Enjoy!
Before (sorry, bad lighting, I swear it wasn’t on purpose and it also didn’t help that the wall and her clothes were orange)…

After… (much better lighting in this shot… we went into the bathroom for this. lol!)

Photo and Video Shoot – Collaborative Effort
My girl NARVELY LABASTIDE asked me to help her out at a shoot yesterday, I wasn’t very sure about the details as it was put together pretty quickly but I agreed nonetheless. That’s what friends are for, right? She picked me up at home and we headed to the Anchorage in Chaguaramas, where we met the designer and crew we would be working with for the day.
As soon as I met the designer, Berns Bedard, it clicked in my head that I saw this woman before, I mean other than Thursday night at Fashion Week. Although I wasn’t sure, I still asked… “Are you Ms. Queen of Bling?” She stopped and stared at me for a second and then said “You know me from You Tube?!?!”
Yes friends, I know her from You Tube, you see, before Carnival, Berns sent a video over to Saucy at Trinidad Carnival Diary with her demonstration of the waterproof makeup that she would have worn for carnival 2010. After that, I checked out some of her other videos and yesterday it took a couple of minutes after I thought to myself that she looked so familiar for me to make the connection.
Bernadette “Berns” Bedard (interview coming soon) currently resides in Canada and owns Passion Fruit Designs, some of the most blinged out bikinis I’ve ever seen. Man, I don’t know how you feel about sparkle but it gets me weak in the knees.
We met the rest of the crew who we worked with for the day, Kibwe and his team from CENTRIC; “Spice” and Nicholas who were taping for their show called SPLASH, the beautiful models, Leah Marville (Miss Barbados 2009 and Television Host) (interview coming soon), Crystal Cunningham (Model and Television Host), Models Vanna and Lee-Ann, and special guest for the day, Kees Dieffenthaller. As well, the crew from Nexus Studios was there to handle the photography.
It was really hot and mosquitoes were out with a vengeance but we got the job done and everyone was happy at the end of the day. Maybe about three minutes after the final frame it started to rain, I mean right out of nowhere the clouds hid the sun and the crew had to run for shelter, we didn’t complain too much though because the job was already done.
Here are a couple behind the scenes shots from Narvely’s camera…
